LSU football: Coach Kelly Makes a Coaching Hire

LSU coach Brian Kelly reportedly added a familiar name to his coaching staff. The Tigers will hire Gerald Chatman for an analyst role according to Bruce Feldman. Chatman most recently served as the defensive line coach and interim defensive coordinator at Colorado before the Buffaloes hired Deion Sanders. Chatman also worked as defensive line coach at Tulane and as a defensive assistant with the Cincinnati Bengals.

“SOURCE: Former CU DL coach Gerald Chatman, who took over as DC for the Buffs mid-year, is expected to return to LSU as an analyst,” Feldman wrote on Twitter. “The 34-year-old former Bengals assistant turned down some Group of 5 DL/OLB jobs to return to LSU. He had been on staff under Ed Orgeron in 2021.”

A native of Wisconsin, Chatman spent two seasons in the SEC — one at LSU in 2021 and one at Texas A&M as a graduate assistant in 2015. Much of Chatman’s career has been in SEC country, as he coached linebackers and defensive backs at Tennessee State in 2017 and 2018 in addition to his year at Tulane. LSU is known for featuring a deep support staff of off-field assistants and analysts.
